A high level delegation represented by H.E Mutahi Kagwe Minister of Health of the Kenyan Republic and Dr. Paolo Rotelli the Vice President of San Donato Hospital Group visited the construction site of the New Galeazzi Hospital at the EXPO 2015 Milan area today MIND, Milano Innovation District, this hospital together with the Human Technopole and the State University, will be one of the cornerstones of the future ecosystem of research, innovation and care, a unique project in Italy and among the most advanced in Europe.
The new structure, a building of about 180,000 square meters of modern architectural conception, designed according to the most innovative standards of sustainability and functionality, will combine in a single location the skills and specializations related to the two existing Institutes that are part of the San Donato Group, the Galeazzi Orthopedic Institute and the Sant’Ambrogio Clinical Research Institutes.
The New Galeazzi will be the first example in Italy of the Hospital of the future, based on the close integration between Research, University Education and Care. This is the first example of a modern vertical hospital in Italy, among the few in Europe and in the world. In addition to the Classrooms for the University and the Laboratories for Research, it will be increased to 600 beds, which will be flanked by spaces and technologies for diagnosis and intervention, according to the most advanced methods of care and hospital techniques. The new Galeazzi is a candidate for the LEED GOLD V4 Certification and is already registered for the evaluation procedure.
In addition of the New Galeazzi the delegation visited the new San Raffaele that just opened its door, the new Surgical and Emergency Pole of the S. Raffaele Hospital in Milan has now come to an end, confirming itself as a model of European excellence, combining scientific research with training through the university department.
The new hub, born from an investment of over 50 million euros by the San Donato Group, was built with sustainable materials and solutions such as the use of natural light conveyed also in the underground connections with the rest of the hospital.
The envelope of the building was made with eco-sustainable technologies and materials, such as the external ceramic slats capable of disintegrating smog particles, like forty trees, and preserving heat, reducing energy consumption by 60%.
This delegation visit came after the signature of the agreement between the Kenyan government and GKSD, a subsidiary of the San Donato Group, for the construction of a hospital and university center for mental illnesses and drug addiction at Nairobi where work could start soon on a large “citadel of mental health”, in line with a long-term vision to guarantee universal care in Kenya and to provide improved assistance and quality services to the Kenyan population, making the East African Country a health center in the region.
Today Nairobi has a psychiatric hospital that is absolutely insufficient and inadequate for developments in the treatment of mental disorders. For the new Mathari Mental Hub, a large green area of about 80 hectares has been identified at the gates of the Kenyan capital where should rise the citadel made of about twenty low buildings, for over 172 thousand square meters, 16% of the area, including hospital, offices, residences for patients, apartments for 300 families of health personnel, a stadium with sports facilities complementary to therapies. The facility could accommodate up to 600 patients assisted by a staff of about 1,100 health personnel and technicians. The San Donato Group has the task of training local staff and starting a university center included in the Mathari Mental Hub.
