HOLOGRAPHIC SURGERIES AT GRUPPO SAN DONATO THE NEW ERA FOR HEALTHCARE

January 30, 2021

Dr. Massimo Chessa, Head of Cardiology and Adult Congenital cardiology Department at the San Donato teaching Hospital and Research Institute in Milan, the only doctor from Italy participating to the 24 hours Holographic Surgery marathon organized by Microsoft. The marathon is showing the health impact of mixed reality technology, which thanks to the Dynamics 365 Remote Assist solution makes possible new techniques of collaboration and visualization of information, allows to adopt new surgical procedures and significantly increases the level of precision of operations.

During the marathon, live streams of 13 orthopedic operations were shown around the world, led by Dr. Thomas Gregory, Head of the Orthopaedic & Trauma Department at Avicenne AP-HP University Hospital in France. Thanks to the holographic computer for mixed reality HoloLens 2, the various surgeons shared their field of view with colleagues. In fact, the doctors collaborates in video conferences with surgeons located in 13 different countries: France, India, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Ukraine, Germany, Belgium, Morocco, Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Thanks to HoloLens 2, surgeons are able to show their field of vision to colleagues in other parts of the world, share ‘best practices’ and interact with anatomical images of patients in the form of hologram.

Holographic visor HoloLens 2 has been used since a couple of years at the San Donato Hospital, in the departments of cardiology and cardiac surgery. Dr. Massimo Chessa explained the benefits of mixed reality in the surgical field, and deepened the details of the collaboration between the San Donato group and the innovative start-up Artiness. According to Chessa, HoloLens 2 has been a key support in approaching particular health circumstances, such as children’s heart cancers, malformations or some rare pathologies. The headset allowed doctors to make assessments of the surgical strategy to be adopted, even before entering the room.

Mixed reality is a fusion between the physical world and the digital world that makes possible new interactions between man, computer and environment. Holographic devices, like Microsoft’s Hololens, are able to place digital content in the real world as if it were actually there.
