San Donato Hospital, Microsoft and Nvidia are developing Artificial Intelligence to fight Covid 19

An innovative technology that will help treat the new coronavirus by calculating, based on a series of clinical and diagnostic indicators, the probability of a patient developing the most severe forms of Covid-19 and thus enabling targeted and timely health interventions.

It is the goal of the AI-SCoRE  (Artificial Intelligence – Sars Covid Risk Evaluation) project realised by Prof. Carlo Tacchetti and Prof. Antonio Esposito, our University Vita-Salute San Raffaele part of San Donato Hospital Group and developed in collaboration with Microsoft and NVIDIA, with the Center of Omics Sciences of San Raffaele directed by Prof. Giovanni Tonon and with the support of two companies: Orobix, active in AI systems, and Porini, partner of Microsoft.

The software in development with data from more than 2000 patients (and whose prognosis is known) between San Raffaele Hospital, Bolognini Hospital of Seriate and Cardiological Center Monzino. Started from the awareness that only a small percentage of patients – around 5-10% – develop the most serious (and sometimes fatal) forms of the disease, and often these forms have a rapid and unpredictable course that lead the patient to switch from a mild symptoms to severe respiratory failure in a very short time.

“In Phase 1 we could not correctly and in advance identify the most fragile people among patients with the first symptoms of the disease – explains Prof. Carlo Tacchetti, coordinator of the project – We want to be able to do it accurately and quickly, because only then will we be able to understand who are the subjects that, once infected, need timely care.”

The project will start from this second objective (recognizing at an early-stage patients who will develop the worst form of the disease) with an AI algorithm that will integrate:

  1. diagnostic images;
  2. clinical and laboratory parameters;
  3. inflammatory state;
  4. genetic profile of the patient and the virus.

The technology platform is based on Microsoft’s latest data analytics and Artificial Intelligence innovations and will enable the collection, processing, management and use of heterogeneous, multi-sourced data to provide medical and research staff with timely and detailed information to support the decision-making phase and processes needed to respond to the various stages of the emergency.

“في المرحلة الاولى من الجااحة لم نتمكن من تحديد بشكل صحيح ومسبق للأشخاص الأكثر عرضة بين المرضى الذين يعانون من الأعراض الأولى للمرض”، يشرح البروفيسور لارسن. كارلو تاكشيتي، منسق المشروع – نريد أن نكون قادرين على القيام بذلك بدقة وسرعة، لأنه عندئذ فقط سنتمكن من فهم من هم الأشخاص الذين يحتاجون إلى الرعاية في الوقت المناسب بمجرد إصابتهم”.

بدأ المشروع بهدف  (الاعتراف في مرحلة مبكرة من المرضى الذين سيطورون أسوأ أشكال المرض) باستخدام خوارزمية الذكاء الاصطناعي من شأنها أن تدمج:

  1. صور التشخيص؛
  2. المعلمات السريرية والمختبرية؛
  3. الحالة الالتهابية؛
  4. الملف الوراثي للمريض والفيروس.
