Director of General and Oncologic Department of Surgery at Policlinico San Marco Hospital
Doctor Stefano Olmi was born on September 9th, 1967 in Milan (Italy). He graduated from Medical School in 1995 with magna cum laude (University of Milan, Italy). He completed his Residency in General Surgery in 2000 at the University of Milan (Italy).
Since the early nineties, Doctor Stefano Olmi started the first Italian laparoscopic experience with Professor Enrico Croce at Fatebenefratelli Hospital in Milan. Olmi has become a pioneer in laparoscopic surgery, developing surgical technique and instruments (STORZ and AESCULAP). Olmi performed more than 8000 procedure, both laparoscopic and laparotomy, as first operator: 600 laparoscopic colorectal resections, 150 gastric resections for malignancy (both total and subtotal) and more than 250 laparoscopic procedures for functional pathology of the esophagus (such as achalasia, jatal hernia and GERD); about 30 laparoscopic pancreatic resections (10 laparoscopic pacreaticoduodenectomy); more than 800 interventions for morbid obesity (Sleeve, Mini-Bypass, Gastric Plication); more than one thousand intervention of laparoscopic repair of abdominal wall defects.
Right now Olmi is the Director of the Department of General and Oncologic Surgery, Centre for Mini-invasive and laparoscopic surgery, S.I.C.OB. (Italian Society of Bariatric Surgery) Referral Center for Bariatric Surgery in Italy, at Policlinico San Marco Hospital, Gruppo San Donato. Doctor Olmi is also an adjunct professor at the University of Vita-Salute – San Raffaele Hospital in Milan and he is the tutor of the General Surgery Residency Program at the University of Milan. He is also tutor for the A.C.O.I. (Italian Association of Hospital Surgeons) Advanced Laparoscopy Course (upper gi and colorectal), Hernia Laparoscopy Course, Bariatric Laparoscopy course.
At Policlinico San Marco every year are performed almost 2400 procedures, more than 90% with the laparoscopic approach, also in an emergency setting. Every year the team of Doctor Olmi performs the following interventions: >1000 laparoscopic bariatric, 250 laparoscopic colorectal resections, 150 laparoscopic fundoplications for GERD, 50 laparoscopic gastrectomy for cancer, 100 an incisional hernia laparoscopic repair, 300 an inguinal hernia laparoscopic repair (TAPP and TEP).

– S.I.C.OB. (Italian Society of Bariatric Surgery) Referral Center for Bariatric Surgery in Italy
– A.C.O.I. (Italian Association of Hospital Surgeons) Referral Center for advanced laparoscopic surgery (Upper GI and Colorectal and abdominal wall repair).
Every year 2 advance laparoscopic surgery course, 4 bariatric surgery courses, 2 abdominal wall repair laparoscopic surgery course is held at our Centre, with more than 30 surgeons coming from all over Italy.
Doctor Olmi is part of the Executive Board of S.I.C.E. (Italian Society of Endoscopic Surgery). He wrote 3 books about specific laparoscopic technique (abdominal wall, colorectal, GERD) and recently a manual about laparoscopic surgery technique. He also wrote 40 article published on international peer-reviewed journals.
