The San Donato Hospital Group is in the process of finalizing a research project aiming at using the Artificial Intelligence which will furnish a more rapid and precise X-ray and CT diagnosis’s results for Covid 19 patients, it also permits the early evaluation of the pulmonary impact of the disease.
In fact, this technology is able to provide a second opinion to the radiologist in the reading of X-rays and computer tomography (CT) for the diagnosis of COVID-19 and to assess the extent and characteristics of its effects in the lungs.
This is the overall objective of the research project coordinated by the San Donato University Hospital, submitted to the Italian Ministry of Health for the recent call on COVID-19. Prof. Francesco Sardanelli, Director of the Radiology Service of the hospital and principal investigator of the project, explains what are the potential benefits of using the A. I. (Artificial Intelligence) in this clinical field. ” If it is carried out, we will have a database of more than 5,000 cases, including X-rays and CT. In fact, large numbers are required to train Artificial Intelligence systems. This could make available the experience accumulated in some areas of Northern Italy in the last two months to other Italian situations or to other countries with low circulation of the virus, reducing the time of the learning curve”.
This technology will be also used as a portative device for home care services specially for elderly and special needs patients, and will avoid the spread of the disease by giving immediate results and supporting the decision making.
It is also a very sensitive exam that is accurate in more than 90% of the cases and reduces the incidence of the false negative Covid19 tests by 40% as it is a supporting tool for the doctors.
